  • Overview

    Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction of concrete paving and concrete activities by performing the following duties. May be designated to work away from home for extended periods according to projects needs. This position is typically expected to work alongside those they supervise performing tasks as needed to complete the work on time.


    • Read, understand, interpret and enforce safety policies and practices.

    • Examines contract drawings to determine dimensions of structure.

    • Lays out floor-plan/worksite as needed.

    • Determines sequence of activities concerned with placing forms, setting grade, pouring concrete, and striping concrete structures.

    • Assigns workers to such tasks as cutting material to size, building concrete forms, setting grades, pouring and finishing concrete.

    • Inspects work performed by subordinates to ensure quality and meets owners expectations.

    • Supervises workers engaged in building concrete pavement, concrete flatwork, and other concrete elements.

    • Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.  Understands cost to do the work, budgets and how to build the work efficiently.

    • Establishes or adjusts work procedures to meet production schedules.

    • Recommends measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product to increase efficiency of work crew.

    • Analyzes and resolves work problems, assists workers in solving work problems, and initiates or suggests plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.

    • Estimates, requisitions, and inspects materials.

    • Maintain a general knowledge of equipment used on the job including basic understanding of equipment limits and designed purposes.

    • As directed by the Superintendent, assists with ordering supplies.

    • Should be able to perform all essential duties and responsibilities of a Master Carpenter, Master Concrete Finisher.

    • Should be able to know how to get required tools, materials, and equipment ready to construct concrete elements.

    • Understand how many people is required to build the work and be a leader to get the most out of their subordinates.

    Education and/or Experience

    High school Diploma or GED with a minimum of five years related experience and/or training.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, contract drawings and specifications, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to calculate proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic arithmetic, algebra and geometry.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
